"LETTERS / the noise in my eyes"

In this series, entitled LETTERS, photographs are printed on canvas, and then letters randomly selected from various novels, poetry books, song lyrics, etc., which the artist says are the origins of his own gaze, are written on top of them with oil sticks. These letters intertwine the gaze directed at the landscape with the origins that lie behind it, and emerge as a new, re-experiential landscape, something like a quiet chaos. This is the announcement of a new series of works by Ryuhei Yokoyama, who has expressed himself in various ways as a street photographer. Please come and see for yourself.

"The letters I had encountered up until then had become images, woven together in an inseparable conflation, and eventually turned into a melody like noise that continued to resonate quietly within my gaze. They were like letters from far away that took me on a journey around the city."

"Before I knew it, the letters I had encountered thus far became images, woven together in an inseparable and harmonious way, and eventually became a noise-like melody that continued to echo quietly within my gaze. They were also like letters from far away, taking me on a journey around the city.

📷Artist introduction: Ryuhei Yokoyama
Photographer. Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1979. With the theme of "What is a city?", he mainly works on street snaps using black and white film. He creates images of the flowing city by changing his perspective and approach. His major collections include "A History of Graffiti of Light and Dancing Mice, Beautiful as if Written on Scrap Paper Rolling in the Wind" (2018, BUFFALO PRESS). In the "WALL" series, which he has been working on since 2020, he began production using a unique method of overlapping multiple prints. By layering the ink and gradually creating a three-dimensional texture, he has created a new photographic expression that can be described as "semi-three-dimensional," in which different expressions appear depending on the angle of the viewpoint. He has exhibited his works both in Japan and abroad, including at VOLTA NEWYORK 2022 (New York, USA), the 8th Dali International Photography Festival (Dali, China) in 2019, and the group exhibition "off the record vol.12 aube artistique" (Paris, France) in the same year.

Ryuhei Yokoyama is a photographer born in 1979. With the theme “What is a city?,” his work focuses on street snapshots using black and white film, creating images of the city in flux using different perspectives and approaches. His recent works include the WALL series, which focuses on the existence of graffiti. Yokoyama's works have been exhibited in both Japan and abroad, including “2019 Dali International Photography Exhibition” (2019, Dali, China) and “off the record vol.12 aube artistique” (2019, In )( between gallery, Paris).
