engrace Kintsugi Jewelry Shop
This is an experience where you can freely combine pieces of traditional Japanese pottery with colorful natural stones to create SDGs accessories using Kintsugi.
We mainly purchase broken or chipped ceramic vessels, cups, and other items that are no longer in use from potteries all over the country, and then polish each piece by hand to create ceramic fragments.
Choose your favorite unique accessory parts, each with a different color, pattern, and shape, and combine them with colorful natural stones to create your own one-of-a-kind Kintsugi jewelry!
This workshop offers an experience of creating Kintsugi SDGs jewelry by freely combining traditional Japanese fragments of pottery with vibrant natural stones.
We prepare the fragments of pottery by handcrafting and polishing them from pottery craftsmen mainly from kilns all over Japan.
Fragmented pieces of cracked or chipped pottery become unique parts, each with their own colour, shape and pattern.
You can then combine it with colorful natural stones to create your own “one-of-a-kind Kintsugi jewelry.”

[What is Kintsugi?]
This is a uniquely Japanese technique dating back to the Muromachi period for repairing broken ceramics. It is a traditional technique in which cracked or chipped pottery is repaired by joining them together with lacquer and then decorating the joints by sprinkling gold or silver powder on them.
In the Shop, we will not use lacquer extracted from the urushi tree, but will instead use synthetic lacquer (paint) that is less likely to cause irritation and dries quickly, as well as gold powder (a blend of brass and pearl powder), so even first-time participants can participate with confidence.
【What is Kintsugi?】
“Kintsugi” is a technique unique to Japan that has been used since the Muromachi period (1336-1573) to repair and decorate broken ceramics.
It involves using lacquer (urushi) to join and bond the cracked or chipped pieces of the pottery, and then applying powdered gold, silver, or other metals to decorate the mended seams.
In our workshop, we use synthetic lacquer (a paint that is less likely to cause allergies and dries faster) and a blend of gold powder (brass and pearl powder) instead of lacquer obtained from the urushi tree.
This allows even beginners to participate with confidence.

In our September workshop, we'll feature two types of beautiful Japanese ceramics: the elegantly painted Arita-yaki and the characterful Hagi-yaki from Hagi City in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
Hagi-yaki pieces are wood-fired for over 20 hours in traditional climbing kilns, resulting in soft, subdued tones and a deeply organic texture. This time, you'll have the chance to work with ceramics from Shokeian, known for its gentle color palette, and Shownzan Kiln, celebrated for its stunning glaze gradations.

Instructor: engrace Natsuka Akanuma / Instructor: Natsuka Akanuma

CEO, engrace Inc.
She began making handmade accessories in 2011, and in 2019, after learning kintsugi in Kyoto, she began working under the name "Kintsugi Jewelry engrace."
Fascinated by the traditional pottery culture of various parts of Japan, she purchases pottery fragments scheduled for disposal from kilns across the country, including Arita ware, Karatsu ware, Hagi ware, Oribe ware, Kyo ware, and Kiyomizu ware, and upcycles them into jewelry by combining gold lacquer with natural stones and pearls.
Following the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred in 2024, she undertook reconstruction support activities, transforming broken Kutani ware delivered from the affected areas into jewelry. Her efforts were featured in the Hokuriku Chunichi Shimbun and Sankei Shimbun, and in May 2025 in Vogue Japan. She has attracted attention from many quarters, including appearing live on NHK's "Hot Kansai."
Currently, in addition to selling at department stores nationwide, the company operates its own e-commerce website. It is also expanding overseas, primarily to the United States, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, and its participation in events and Shop overseas has been met with positive feedback.
In the fall of 2024, the company will open an atelier at the foot of Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine Kyoto, where it plans to develop a wide range of activities, including providing experiences for foreign visitors to Japan and creating spaces that connect with the local community.

Natsuka Akanuma is the founder of Kintsugi Jewelry engrace, combining traditional Japanese Kintsugi techniques with gemstones and pearls to create upcycled jewelry from broken pottery. Inspired by Japan's ceramic heritage, she works with Arita, Karatsu, Hagi, Oribe, and other regional wares.
Following the 2024 Noto Earthquake, she launched a recovery project using damaged Kutani ware, featured in VOGUE JAPAN, Sankei Shimbun, and NHK. Her work is available at department stores across Japan and online, with growing international presence in the US, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong through exhibitions and workshops.
